In 1959, a group of six Antonine Sisters were sent to the United States both to further their education and to become better acquainted with the American educational system. While living in Cleveland, Ohio, and working in the Maronite parish there, the sisters formed a choir and taught Arabic and Religious Education.
On April 7, 1965, the Sacred Congregation for the Oriental Churches granted the sisters the required permission for the establishment of a religious house in the United States. On August 12, 1965, the sisters moved to their new house in North Jackson, Ohio, where they were granted a convent plus a plot of land on the grounds of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon.
At that time, the sisters worked at the shrine. In addition, they directed and taught Maronite Christian Formation classes in three different Maronite parishes located in Youngstown, OH, Akron, OH and New Castle, PA.
The Antonine Sisters ministered to the Maronite and non-Maronite communities alike. They taught religion at Cardinal Mooney High School in Youngstown. One of the nuns who was a registered nurse taught at the nursing divisions of Boston College and the Ursuline College in Cleveland. Another one worked as a pastoral minister at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown, OH. In addition, two of the sisters directed the religious education program in Richmond, VA and assisted in a nursery school there.
At present, 6 sisters are assigned to North Jackson, OH, and they minister to people of every race, color, national origin, religion, age, sex, or disability. They own and direct an Adult Day Care Center. In addition, they direct the religious education program at Saint Maron Parish in Youngstown, OH, conduct baptism and adult formation classes, teach languages, and assist with choir, music and liturgical ministries. They are also active members in several eparchial and local committees for vocation and youth ministry.
